Under Pressure is a narrative based game that has to taking on the role of an over worked spaceship mechanic on a stressful journey. The game deals with themes of overwork and burnout. It consists of branching pathways that can steer the story in different directions and accumulated consequences for previous actions. The game can take different turns from the player's choices in the moment and the availability of those choices can be influenced by past decisions.
A large focus of this game was to ensure that no matter what the player's choices were, the narrative outcome would be satisfying, if not exactly what the player had hoped for. The main goal of this project was to create a story that was a solid and cohesive whole, while still allowing the player to not only observe the story but to engage with and shape it's final form.
Under Pressure was developed in Twine, an engine that I had previously been completly unaware of. Despite the inital learning curve, Twine proved to be an excelent resource for development. It allowed for quite a lot of standard web development work to be accomplished in only a few minutes. The only real chanllenge it posed to development at all was different frame of mind I needed for development with it. However, after only a short while of working with Twine, I was able to develop the right method of thinking about it and from there on it was a breeze to develop with.
